Opinion: Olympic leaders misguided in setting new date for Tokyo Games Christine Brennan USA TODAY

In these extraordinary times, in the midst of sickness and death and despair and uncertainty throughout the world, we now know the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will begin July 23, 2021, one day earlier than they would have started this summer.

I care more about the Olympics than anyone I know, but I didn’t need to know that date today, did you? Did athletes really need to know that date today? Many can’t train safely anyway due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Did sponsors really need to know that date today? Did any of us really need to know that date today?

Once again, the International Olympic Committee has displayed how utterly tone deaf it can be. Everyone on earth is trying to live through, cope with and survive a pandemic. We don’t need to know the date of an event in 2021, even if it’s the world’s largest. Not today.

Just a week ago, the IOC gave itself four weeks to decide whether to postpone this summer’s Olympics. Now that the Games are postponed, the IOC took less than a week to rush to give us a new date. There are still three weeks left on the clock from the previous deadline.

Out of respect for those on the front lines, out of respect for those who are suffering, out of respect for all its fellow world citizens, the IOC should have stayed silent and waited. Give us the new date when we can see the light at the end of the tunnel in Europe, in Asia, in North America and everywhere else. Or at least give us the date in a few more weeks. Don’t insert yourself into the conversation now. Not today.

Clarity for the Olympic community of course is important. Having covered 18 consecutive Olympic Games, winter and summer, I understand the massiveness of the logistics and the importance of having everyone on the same schedule. But we already knew the rescheduled Olympics would be held in one of two time slots: either in the spring of 2021, or the summer of 2021. Tokyo planners knew. Ticket vendors knew. Federations knew. Coaches knew. Athletes knew. That was good enough for right now.

There’s something else we all know: it’s sheer folly to say with certainty right now that anything – anything at all – will happen at any set date in the future. How do we know the world will be ready for an Olympics on July 23, 2021? I certainly hope it will be, but what if it’s not?

As Amir Attaran, an epidemiologist and professor of law and medicine at the University of Ottawa, told USA TODAY Sports last week:

“If they put it on the calendar, they have to be prepared to perhaps move it a second time because we just don’t know when it will be safe enough to proceed. Could it be in 12 months? Possibly, but are you going to take a big bet on that? Because that’s what the IOC would be doing. Would it be safe in two years? Almost certainly, but are they going to commit right now to two years?”

I can’t help but think that some in the IOC believe they are going to be the ones to take our minds off of the pandemic right now, or lead us out of it, or make us feel better, or some other nonsense.

Who among us, watching the news or treating patients or worrying about a sick neighbor or family member, was asking themselves on Monday, March 30, 2020: I wonder what date in 2021 the Tokyo opening ceremony will be held?

That’s a question that most definitely did not need an answer today.
Once again, the International Olympic Committee has displayed how utterly tone deaf it can be.
